In the tea ceremony, the handheld fan sensu is not used to cool oneself, rather, the fan - which is always kept closed - is used to express respect for people, flowers (which represent nature), calligraphy (which represents the spiritual world) or a tea room (the setting for a unique gathering). The gin sensu has mainly a very strong symbolic character.
