For the classic Gong Fu Cha, the teapot or gaiwan is placed on a chachuan or plate, with or without a coaster. The cups (and possibly a chahai or other pouring vessel) are presented on a tray. All the utensils together can be put on a surface such as a tea towel.
The residual water is emptied into a separate water vessel, as there is no integrated recipient to take the excess water and tea.
