Tea Journey Taiwan
Oolong
Over the centuries, an independent Chinese-influenced tea culture has developed on the island of Taiwan. The proximity to the sea and the massive central mountain range characterize the terroir. Taiwan thus offers a variety of tea regions in a very small area. The journey takes you via the lively capital Taipei and nearby tea gardens to the mountains of Alishan, where you can discover not only highly flavoured High Mountain Oolong but also a fascinating natural landscape. The journey continues to Nantou in the centre of the island, the core region of the tea trade and gateway to the classic tea-growing regions such as Dong Ding.

Tea Journey Taiwan - Oolong
Several tea-growing regions can be reached within an hour from the capital Taipei, as can the village of Yingge, which is dedicated to Taiwanese ceramics.
In the mountains of Alishan, there is not only the excellent High Mountain Oolong, but also a fascinating landscape.

Day 1 | Taipeh
We take the cable car from the outskirts of the city to Muzha. There we have our first tea with the best view of the city. After lunch, we visit a tea farmer and enjoy our first insights into the production process and learn about the first Taiwanese teas.
Day 2 | Taipeh
We visit Blue Magpie Tea in Pingling, a co-operative in which several tea farmers are represented. First we visit the local tea museum, then they show us tea fields and production facilities. Finally, we taste various teas.
Day 3 | Taipeh
Visit to the ceramic town of Yingge. We look over the shoulder of an artist and visit Eilong, one of our suppliers of crockery. Afterwards we have time for a stroll through the village and the opportunity to visit many ceramic shops.
Day 4 | Taipeh
Today we stay in the city of Taipei. On the way to a beautiful teahouse, we walk through the 228 Peace Memorial Park and the park around the Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall. After lunch in a traditional noodle restaurant, we visit Taipei's old town with its many traditional shops and teahouses.
Day 5 | Taipeh – Tongluo – Nantou
We take the minibus to Tongluo (1h30). At the Tongluo Tea Factory, we pick and process a green tea by hand. After lunch, we learn more about the many different varieties in the tea garden. Then continue to Nantou (1h30).
Day 6 | Nantou
We visit the Dong Ding mountain above the village of Lugu, a well-known tea-growing area with many beautiful tea gardens. We taste various teas at a tea-producing family. After lunch, we drive to Mingjian and visit one of our suppliers. Here we can experience another way of making tea, drink his teas and immerse ourselves further in the diversity of Taiwanese tea culture.
Day 7 | Nantou
We visit Shalinxin, one of the highest tea-growing regions in Taiwan, at over 2000 metres above sea level. With the most beautiful view of slopes full of tea fields, we taste the tea with the tea farmer.
Day 8 | Nantou – Chiayi
In the morning, we visit a family that has been producing tea for generations and try out various (even unusual) preparations. We listen, learn and drink. After lunch we drive to Chiayi (1h30).
Day 9 | Chiayi
We drive an hour by car to a tea-producing family. Together we pick fresh tea leaves in their gardens and then process them ourselves into an oolong tea. On the way back, we make a small diversion and visit the village of Guanziling. There are natural hot springs there and we relax in a traditional bath.
Day 10 | Chiayi
We visit the national park on Mount Alishan. To do this, we first drive up the mountain by car. Once in the national park, we change to the old, famous wooden train for the last stretch of the journey. Once at the top, we take a walk and enjoy the fascinating flora of Alishan. On the way back, we stop halfway at the tea farmer from the previous day, where we finish processing our own oolong (2h journey each way).
Day11 | Chiayi
On our last day, we stroll through Chiayi, visit the local market and a tea shop for the last time. We enjoy a hearty lunch in a traditional local teahouse and round off the trip with a cup of tea. We return to the railway station by minibus (30 min) and board the high-speed train to Taipei. Alternatively, you can get off on the way and travel directly to the airport (duration 2 hours).
